여름의 조각들 Pieces of Summer

오케이앤피(OKNP, 서울)는 3월 25일부터 5월 9일까지 박정원의 개인전<Pieces of Summer>를 개최한다. 국민대학교 회화과에서 학사와 석사 과정을 마친 박정원은 극적이고 몽환적인 인물화를 통해 인간의 육체와 심리를 탐구해왔다. 최근 그는 표현의 대상을 확장하여 시들어가는 꽃, 반려묘의 표정, 늦은 오후 바다 위를 지나가는 구름 등 일상적인 풍경 속에서 순간의 감정을 포착하고 있다. 이번 전시는 스페이스 토핑에서 이어지는 순회 전시로, <German Iris> 시리즈와 더불어 여러 점의 신작을 선보인다.
이번 전시는 지난 여름, 작가가 경험한 평범한 일상의 장면들을 비일상적인 시선으로 조명한다. 특히 화병 속의 꽃은 작가가 10여 년간 지속적으로 탐구해 온 중요한 소재다. 도시에서 나고 자란 작가에게 꽃이 피고 지는 과정을 가까이에서 바라보는 경험은 새롭고도 인상적인 사건이었다. 그에게 꽃의 연약함은 삶의 순간적인 아련함을 떠올리게 했고, 프랑스 철학자 롤랑 바르트가 말한 ‘푼크툼(punctum)’—무의식적으로 내면을 찌르는 감각—과도 맞닿아 있다. 박정원은 이러한 순간의 감정과 자극을 섬세한 터치와 미묘한 색감으로 표현한다.
흘러가는 시간을 포착하려는 많은 화가들처럼, 박정원 역시 순간을 그림으로 담아내지만, 그에게 중요한 것은 단순한 인상의 기록이 아니다. 그는 풍경이든 정물이든 감정을 지닌 인물화처럼 다루며, 그 안에 내재된 감성적 울림을 회화적 언어로 해석한다. 목탄, 수채화, 유화 등 다양한 매체를 활용해 감정을 형상화하는 그의 작업은 깊은 공감과 몰입을 유도한다. 이에 대해 추희정 큐레이터는 “벗어 놓은 어제를 다시 입듯, 반복되는 일상 속에서 박정원은 비일상적인 감흥의 순간을 끄집어낸다”고 평가한다.
이번 전시의 제목 <Pieces of Summer>는 길었던 지난 여름 동안 작가가 마주한 자연과 풍경, 그리고 일상의 단상을 담고 있다. <생각하는 남자>, <Queen’s Nail> 등 인물화뿐만 아니라 다양한 신작들을 통해 박정원의 작품 세계를 엿볼 수 있다. 그의 회화가 전달하는 비일상적인 순간의 감정을 관객들이 함께 경험할 수 있기를 기대한다.
OKNP (Seoul) presents Jungwon Bac’s solo exhibition “Pieces of Summer” from Mar. 25 to May 9. Jungwon Bac, who has completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Painting at Kookmin University, has explored the human body and psychology through dramatic and dreamlike figure paintings. Recently, she has expanded the subject of expression to capture the emotions of moments in everyday scenery, such as withering flowers, the expressions of pet cats, and clouds passing over the sea in the late afternoon. This exhibition is a touring exhibition from Space Toping, featuring several new works in addition to the “German Iris” series.
The exhibition highlights ordinary daily scenes that the artist experienced last summer from an unusual perspective. In particular, “Flower in a Vase” is an important subject the artist has continuously explored for over a decade. For the artist who was born and raised in a city, the experience of seeing flowers bloom and fall up close was a new and impressive event. For her, the fragility of flowers reminds her of the momentary sentiment of life, which is also in line with what French philosopher Roland Barthes called “Punctum”—a sense that unconsciously penetrates the inner self. Jungwon Bac expresses emotions and stimuli at such a moment with delicate touches and subtle colors.
Like many other artists who try to capture the passing of time, Jungwon Bac also captures moments in her paintings. However, not just a record of impressions is what matters to Bac. She treats figure paintings like they contain emotion, whether landscapes or still lifes and interprets the emotional resonance inside them into pictorial language. Her work, which embodies emotions using various media such as charcoal, watercolor, and oil painting, induces deep empathy and immersion. In response, curator Choo Hee-Jung stated, “As if putting yesterday back on again, Jungwon Bac brings out unusual moments of inspiration in her repetitive daily life.”
The title of this exhibition, “Pieces of Summer,” contains the nature, scenery, and everyday fragmentary thought that the artist faced during the last long summer. The visitors can get a glimpse of the world of Jungwon Bac’s work through various new art pieces as well as figure paintings such as “The Thinking Man” and “Queen’s Nail.” It is hoped that the visitors will experience the emotions of unusual moments delivered by her paintings.
